Superiority at the Supermarket

In terms of the items I choose, I am waaaaay better at the supermarket than most and I KNOW that others are jealous of me! How can they not be?? While they have frozen pizza, donuts, cookies, chips, and alfredo sauce in a jar….I, simply, do not. Sometimes I look at other people’s carts in amazement and wonder if they can’t make their own potato salad or I search in vain for some sign of a non-canned, non-frozen fruit or vegetable. I cannot comprehend such things siiiiigh.

Alas, we all have our faults, but at the supermarket, I have none. I should be the poster child of healthy supermarket shopping; matter of fact, I need a giant billboard. Ladies and gentlemen, please witness the perfection that is grocery shopping below (besides the toilet paper and sandwich bags not pictured, I swear that the items below are all I purchased):

Fruit and Veggies: grapefruits, bananas, raspberries, kiwis, baby spinach, beets, avocado, purple onion, mushrooms, red bell pepper, and tomatoes.

Dairy: eggs from vegetarian fed hens, 1%milk, 2% evaporated milk (I was born and raised in a former British colony…its how we drink tea!!), and multigrain Thomas’ English Muffins.

Proteins: canned butter beans (OK, maybe the canned option isn’t that great), reduced fat peanut butter (you should have seen this coming), Muscle Milk Light, hummus, raw walnuts, fish, and sliced ham.

Random: Women’s Health mag (I like some of their healthy recipes), black tea (again, the whole British thing), and goat cheese (I forgot to add this to the dairy section…ooops).

Now, I suppose I must admit that my perfection is limited to the supermarket in my neighbourHOOD. Should you compare my cart to someone from Whole Foods, that person will win because every-friggin-thing in Whole Foods is sustainable, organic, cage-free, grass-fed, free-range, non-polluting, green certified….and I can keep going.

Forced to Eat From a Vending Machine?

DC Cupcake Wars: The Results Are In

My inner chub had the desire to taste cupcakes from the major cupcake bakeries around DC, MD, and VA and I completed this mission yesterday. I evaluated each cupcakery on taste and “cake” moisture. Here is the list (in order of best to not-the-best):

  1. Georgetown Cupcake and Hello Cupcake – the cupcakes from both of these places are AMAZING. They’re soooo moist and just utterly delicious. Obviously try the red velvet (this was kind of my control flavour that I tried in all the cupcakeries but my favourite cupcake from Georgetown is the honey banana and my fav from Hello is vanilla gorilla (also has banana in it).
  2. Alexandria Cupcake – the cupcakes were good, but they didn’t give me an oralgasm like the ones above. They were still good. The store didn’t have a really wide selection the day my aunt and I went but their red velvet was yummy.
  3. Red Velvet Cupcakery – I think I’ve only ever tried their vanilla and red velvet cupcakes. These cupcakes weren’t bad but I don’t think they were as moist as the others.
  4. CakeLove – I’ve tried these cupcakes twice and I wasn’t pleased either time. CakeLove is known for their cakes; maybe I should try that next?

**As greedy as I am, these cupcakes were not all tasted on the same day; they were eaten at different times. Perhaps, for a more scientific result, I should taste these cupcakes all at once. I will not back down should that challenge present itself.

I Ate a Cupcake Yesterday

After the irritating day I had yesterday, I needed something like this. Amanda and I had tapas for dinner then we went to Georgetown Cupcake for dessert. There was a long-ass line when we got there, but it moved quickly. They didn’t have my favourite cupcake (honey banana), so I had a cookies & cream cupcake and Amanda had a strawberry one.

I would have taken a pic but when I got home, the friggin’ electricity was off so I was super-distracted. Anyways, the cupcake was soooo worth the calories.

Today’s Workout…

…was biking. It wasn’t the most robust ride, but it was OK. Anna and I stopped at the farmer’s market in our neighbourhood. I ended up getting green beans, plums, a tomato, blueberries, and banana bread from the cutest old lady. I ate the green beans already….I put them in the oven (broil) with olive oil and sea salt; I let them broil until they’re kinda brown and shriveled.

Later in the day, my friends and I got some Trini (Trinidad) food: I got curry goat with my ‘buss up shut’.
